FINDING RESOURCES IN THE COMMUNITY

It is the responsibility of the parent involvement coordinator to know the community and its resources so that she can guide parents to the support systems that are available to them. In urban areas there are likely to be an array of services; the task is to determine which will really deliver the kind of assistance sought by a family. In rural areas the coordinator may have to do some more rigorous searching in order to piece together appropriate services for the parents with whom she is working. The social services staff of the Head Start program are valuable resources in this process. The following charts offer some ideas on where to look for help within the community. Coordinators should also contact local civic organizations, for many of them have funds to be used for specific purposes, such as medical needs and scholarships.
