Our Future. In September of 2007, the Institute started ground breaking for our new facility. BMCC and the Institute are grateful for the $1.5 million grant received from the U.S. Department of Education, Title III, for construction of a new campus to house the Institute (11,900 sq. ft). Our educational programs will be located and offered in our new facility so our students have the opportunity to receive hands-on training and demonstration of state-of-the-art equipment and labs. The current facility in Cheboygan will relocate to this new building so testing, research and development can be enhanced and continue to grow. We currently have our own production line and laminator for testing, and research and development. Through grants and partnering, we will continue to develop new applications with our advanced material solutions.
Our Business Partner. Bay Mills Indian Community (BMIC) established “Great Lakes Composites” which is a for-profit enterprise. In 2005, BMIC purchased a license for use of the new patented technology DRIFT process. This license provides Great Lakes Composites with the non-exclusive right to practice the Licensed Process for the hot melt impregnation of fibers with polymers to produce Continuous and Discontinuous-Fiber Reinforced Plastic and Elastomeric materials. In addition to our grant through the U.S. Department of Education, an additional $1.5 million was raised through a grant of $906,000 from the Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration (EDA) and a $600,000 cash match from Bay Mills Indian Community (BMIC) to construct a production building (11,180 sq. ft). Great Lakes Composites purchased a ten inch production line to manufacture new technology using our advanced material solutions and are anxiously waiting for their new building to be completed. Great Lakes Composites will create job opportunities in reinforced thermoplastic composites and will continue to grow with the revolutionary reinforced thermoplastic composite technology.
