Textbook (Required)

Introductory Algebra: An Applied Approach - Seventh Edition.

Houghtom Mifflin Publishers, ISBN 0-618-50307 - 2

Authors - Aufmann, Barker, Lockwood

Note: This textbook is used for both MA101 and MA102  intro to algebra

MA101 covers chapters 1 - 5 MA102 covers chapters 6 - 11

The textbook is set up with each chapter beginning with a set of learning objectives, forming the framework for a complete learning system. The objectives are woven throughout the text (i.e. Exercises, Prep Tests, Chapter Reviews, Chapter Tests, Cumulative Tests) as well as through the print and multimedia ancillaries.

Introductory Algebra: An Applied Approach uses an interactive style that provides a student with an opportunity to try a skill as it is presented. Each section is divided into objectives, and every objective contains one or more sets of matched-pair examples. The first example in each set is worked out; the second example, called "You Try It", is for the student to work. By solving this problem, the student actively practices concepts as they are presented in the text.

Applications

One way to motivate an interest in mathematics is through applications. Whenever appropriate, the last objective of a section presents applications that require the student to use problem-solving strategies, along with the skills covered in that section, to solve practical problems. This approach generates student awareness of the value of Algebra as a real-life tool.

Applications are taken from many disciplines including agriculture, business, carpentry, chemistry, construction, Earth science, education, manufacturing, nutrition, real estate, and sociology.
