MA101 - Beginning Algebra I

Course Description

This course is the first in a series, which leads to College Algebra - a requirement for graduation. The course is designed for students with at least 1 year of high school Algebra

It includes a review of basic mathematical and algebraic skills and their applications, polynomials and first degree factoring. It involves a study of real number systems, variable expressions and solving equations.

Prerequisites

AE109 (Fundamentals of Algebra) with a grade of "C" or better or appropriate placement test scores.

Objectives

In relationship with the college mission and objectives to provide Native American Tribes of Michigan and their surrounding community with educated and trained human resources and to prepare and encourage students to pursue further education at the end of this course the student will be able to:

Add, subtract, multiply and divide real numbers

Use exponents, radicals, percents, decimals and fractions

Evaluate variable expressions

Solve simple equations

Add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomials

Solve equations by factoring

Each lesson will cover the material in one full chapter.  Once you have completed the lesson and have a thorough understanding of these objectives, you will write a quiz which will help you determine your level of understanding. These will be computer marked with the scores being sent to the instructor. He will review the marking and then forward the grade to you.  Once you complete the lesson test, you can continue on to the next lesson. These quizzes will make up 60 % of your final mark. A mid term test, based on chapters 1 - 6, will make up 20% of the final grade, and a final exam, based of chapters 6 - 12, will make up the final 20%.
