However, e-mail is preferred and trying to reach Mr. Turco by telephone will likely result in leaving a message on the answering machine. If at any time you find the presentation confusing, or if you have an idea on how to improve it, please feel free to email your instructor with your suggestions. Each lesson should take only a few hours to complete. OBJECTIVES
Each lesson has one or more objectives. After completing the lesson you should be able to perform each objective. As with any other academic course, some objectives will seem very easy and elementary, while others will require more effort to master. It is very important that you master each objective before moving on to the next. If you experience difficulty, please get extra help from either
a) emailing the instructor at BMCC, or
b) the textbook resource area at HMCO Resource Area, or
c) the Smarthinking e-instructor.
Your successful completion of this course depends on your mastery each of these course objectives. You will be the best judge of whether or not you understand the concepts and can perform the objectives. Your instructor will also be monitoring your progress and will offer suggestions based on each lesson quiz. By proceeding methodically through each lesson one objective at a time and through each chapter one lesson at a time, you will gain the understanding necessary to pass the final exam.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK
The textbook for the course is Aufmann, Barker & Lockwood, Basic College Mathematics, An Applied Approach, Seventh Edition, Houghton Mifflin Company, 2003. This same textbook is used for both AE108 and AE109.
AE108 covers chapters 1 - 6 AE109 covers chapters 7 - 12 Students will need to purchase the textbook for this course by contacting Laura Parish at the virtual college office. It contains all the assignments, a tutorial Cd providing additional help in many areas of the textbook, and comes with the e-instructor at Smarthinking (an on-line tutorial service, where you can either email your questions and wait for answers, or you can actually connect live with an e-instructor who will walk you through your problems). The Smarthinking service is accessible at no additional cost for one year from the date of purchase of the textbook, so it is essential if you are taking both courses that you complete them within the one-year period.
