  greater than (>)

Read all of section 1.1 in your textbook, Basic College Mathematics.

At the end of each section there are examples followed by "You Try It." Do each of the You Try It's, comparing your answers to the solutions in S1 at the back of the book.

Student's Opportunity to Ask Questions

If after first reading and studying the examples you still experience difficulty in understanding any part of the lesson, contact the instructor by e-mail. If possible, the question will be answered by e-mail. If necessary, a chat session will be scheduled. Please do not hesitate to ask questions. It is the goal of the instructor to have all students succeed in mastering the material. It is important that you understand this lesson before moving to the next—for mathematics requires a working understanding of many different concepts. If the student fails to gain this understanding, this weak skill area may adversely impact performance in later studies or employment.

A second option is to use the tutorial service offered through Smarthinking.

Lesson Assignment

After reading the section, work the exercises for the section - Page 7 - 8 # 1 - 47 (odd numbers). Check your answers in A1 at the back of the book.

Assignment for Submission

After you have completed the lesson, you are asked to submit some questions to help the instructor monitor your progress. This 20 mark assignment is all multiple choice and must be completed before going on to lesson 2. The marks from this assignment will be added to the marks from the other lessons and will count as 50 marks towards your final BMCC grade. The instructor will review the assignment results and provide feedback on your performance. Remember that using a calculator or any other aid may weaken your understanding of the concept. After all the intent of this course is to provide you the basic tools to tackle more complex problems. Your mastery of these skills is the ultimate goal of this course!

To complete the assignment, go to Lesson 1 Assignment

Chapter Tests

After completing all the lessons for Chapter 1, there will be a 20-mark chapter test on all seven sections. This will include questions from the first 7 lessons. I would suggest that once you have completed all of Chapter 1, then try the Practice Tests prepared by the publisher of the textbook. These tests are for practice only and do not count towards your BMCC mark. However the more you practice, the more likely you will do well on the actual test. the link to the actual test appears at the end of lesson 7.
