Basic College Mathematics Text Book

Textbook: The textbook for the course is Aufmann, Barker & Lockwood, Basic College Mathematics, An Applied Approach, Eighth Edition, Houghton Mifflin Company, 2007 ISBN# 0-618-50305-6. This same textbook is used for both AE108 and AE109. AE108 covers chapters 1 - 6 and AE109 covers chapters 7 - 12. Students will need to purchase the textbook for this course by contacting Laura Parish at the virtual college office. All of the lessons refer to sections in the textbook making it essential to this course. It contains all the assignments, a tutorial CD providing additional help in many areas of the textbook, and comes with the e-instructor at Smarthinking (an on-line tutorial service, where you can either email your questions and wait for answers, or you can actually connect live with an e-instructor who will walk you through your problems). The Smarthinking service is accessible at no additional cost for one year from the date of purchase of the textbook, so it is essential if you are taking both courses that you complete them within the one-year period.

Course Description: This course is designed as a review of the basic mathematical operations. Topics covered include whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and proportions, word problems and some applications for business and industry. Placement in this class is based on the results of assessment scores. Students must meet minimum requirements before enrolling in college level mathematics courses. Developmental in nature, credit in this course does not apply towards graduation.

BMCC Policies:
All students please review the following policies and procedures

Objectives: In relationship with the college mission and objectives to provide Native American Tribes of Michigan and their surrounding community with educated and trained human resources and to prepare and encourage students to pursue further education at the end of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Identify the order relation between two numbers
  2. Write whole numbers in words and in standard form
  3. Write whole numbers in expanded form
  4. Round a whole number to a given place value
  5. Add whole numbers
  6. Subtract whole numbers--with and without borrowing
  7. Multiply whole numbers
  8. Divide whole numbers--with and without remainders
  9. Simplify expressions that contain exponents
  10. Use the Order of Operations Agreement to simplify expressions
  11. Factor numbers
  12. Find the prime factorization of a number

Course Length: The course lasts 15 weeks from the semester start date. There are 36 lessons, each of which will take about 2 - 3 days to complete, followed by a 20 question multiple choice assignment. The instructor will monitor your pace, and remind you if you seem to be falling behind.

Plagiarism and Cheating: The instructor reserves the right to fail any student for cheating on any assignment or plagiarizing the work of others. The BMCC Administrative board may discipline students who cheat or plagiarize.

Attendance and Class Participation: Attendance for AE108 on-line course means doing the course work on a regular basis and completing the tests at the end of each lesson. Since there are no classes as such, you are expected to complete the course in a maximum of 15 weeks from the time you receive your password and text. This works out to a pace of two to three lessons per week, including the final exam.

The course is designed for you to work at your own pace. Since everybody learns at a different rate, then each one of you will proceed at a different pace. Regular progress is expected and the instructor will contact you if your progress seems to be unusually slow.

If you can work faster, that's great. If you are experiencing difficulty with this pace due to illness or any other valid reason, please contact the instructor as soon as possible.

Grading and Evaluation:

Lesson Assignments: Lesson assignments make up 60% of the mid term grade and 50% of the final grade. Once you complete the lesson, and you feel you have an understanding of the material, then you are ready for the lesson assignment. Each assignment is made up of 20 multiple choice questions, based on the material in the lesson.

Chapter Tests: After you complete all the lessons for each chapter in the textbook, you will write a "Chapter Test". To help prepare you for these chapter tests, you can write a "Practice Test" put out by the publisher of the textbook. The link for the practice tests is shown at the end of the last lesson for each chapter. It is highly recommended that you try these practice tests before writing the actual test. Whenever you are ready, you may write the actual test by going to the link at the end of the lesson. The Chapter tests are worth 30% of your final grade.

Final Exam: The material on the final exam will be based on the work in all six chapters.
