Course Title: EC 220 Infant-Toddler Education and Care

Course Description:


We will examine the developmental sequence of infants and toddlers and the strategies for guiding development and working with parents in a home based program. We will look at the experiences of infants and toddlers in five domains of development: cognition, language, motor, social-emotional, and self-help, and learn how they are related to school readiness. Each student will select a family with a young child to work to complete the practicum requirement of this course. This course will introduce students to strategies for observing, recording and guiding children’s developmental sequences as well as strategies for working with parents.

Course Objectives:

  • Students will document the use of family centered anticipatory guidance.
  • Students will evaluate effective parent-professional relationships
  • Students will describe the formal and informal process necessary to develop effective parent-professional relationships
  • Students will identify child development milestones related to school readiness

Field Work Requirements:

Students must identify one family who has a child 8-30 months of age who will consent to: signing a participation contract, allowing home visits, completing a pre-post participation survey, allowing you to complete the required reports following home visits. You will complete family and child visits during assignments 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, and 13. The family will also be asked to sign a participation form and complete a participation evaluation. Additional details are included in assignment 1.

Course Policies:

  • Assignments are received and returned via e-mail. Grades and instructor comments are on each assignment. It is wise to read the comments before completing the next assignment to avoid making the same mistakes twice.
  • Assignment due dates are individualized per your start date. Assignments are due weekly. You have 15 weeks from your start date to complete all assignments. Assignments submitted after the due date will receive a two point per day deduction.
  • College level writing will be expected. Proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation will be expected. Points will be deducted for spelling, grammar, and sentence structure errors. Proof read your work to avoid penalties.
  • You can expect to spend approximately three hours for each assignment.
  • You may complete the course in less than 15 weeks by submitting assignments early.

Grading Scale:

Assignments are awarded points. Points are converted to a percentage grade. Final course grade is earned as follows:

 

540-600 points = A 90-100%

480-539 points = B 80-89%

420-479 points = C 70-79%

419-360 points = D 60-60%

359-0 points = E 59-0%
