Because literacy begins at birth, students will learn about infant-toddler, as well as pre-school development and activities. The course will also examine the role of reading aloud to children.

Prerequisites:  EN111

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
•    Create a literacy rich environment.
•    Employ effective strategies to support emergent readers and writers.
•    Explain how language and literacy are intertwined.
•    Describe the role of phonological, phonemic and phonic awareness.
•    Describe the value of reading aloud to children.

Course Policies:
Assignments are due weekly. Assignments not submitted weekly will receive a 2-point deduction for each date beyond the due date. There are 14 assignments and one final. Some assignments require you to implement a practice session or activity with children. It is suggested that you read the entire assignment before you begin working on it. The final also requires a practical application. Plan extra time for this part of the final.

Assignments must be submitted using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. When answering essays or short answer questions, always begin by restating the question. Make a statement about your theory and support this with information or examples from the text or reading assignment. College level writing skills will be expected. Points will be deducted for assignments submitted with e-mail shorthand, incomplete sentences, or inaccurate information.

Students will have 15 weeks to complete all assignments. All assignments will receive individual comments or questions from the instructor. If assignments need revisions or clarifications, the instructor will note so on the assignment reply. It is expected that you will submit changes or clarifications before moving to the next assignment. Students may not submit the next assignment until the instructor has responded to the current assignment.
