Weekly Assignments:
Each weekly session will be comprised of:

  • Summary
  • Discussion Questions
  • Lesson Quiz
In each weekly lesson, there will be a brief summary of the section(s) of the Performance Standards which are being covered that week.  The student will be required to read those sections of the Performance Standards, and then answer the discussion questions that follow.

Discussion Questions:
E-mail your answers to the discussion questions to the instructor. Begin your email with your name, student identification number, the name of the class, and the weekly lesson you are submitting.  Be sure to type the question first, then your answer.

Make sure when writing your answers that you use the correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Also, make sure that what you are submitting is concise, contains examples, and has enough detail to make your point.  Your answer is not required to be of any certain length, however, it should be of sufficient length to answer the question completely.

Please either type the answer into the body of an email, or if you are going to send it as an attachment, use only Microsoft Word to complete the assignment.

Lesson Quizzes:

Complete your lesson quizzes through QuizServer.  There will be a link to the Quiz that corresponds to each Weekly Lesson at the bottom of that week's lesson.  Simply click on the link and you will be taken to the appropriate Quiz.  Quizzes will be graded by the automated grading program and the results will be e-mailed back to you.  Quiz results will indicate the correct answer for each question.  However, to assist you in understanding those items which you may have answered incorrectly, you may e-mail your instructor for an explanation of these items.

Quizzes may be completed using your Performance Standards (open-book quiz).  Since quizzes are a majority of your points for the course, it is highly recommended that you have them available as you complete your quiz, especially when an answer calls for the exact Performance Standard number.

Lesson Activities:
Most of the weekly lessons include miscellaneous activities designed to assist you with becoming proficient in locating resources and information relating to the different topic areas.  These are included under the weekly assignment, and the point values for each activity are indicated in parentheses. Simply follow the directions given for that activity.

Students who fail to complete the course within the required 15 weeks will have their grade decreased by one letter grade per week, for each week past the 15th week. This will help to make the grading system fair to those students who get their work done on time.

Completing the Course:
This is a 15-week course.  You may complete the course at your own rate, however, all lesson tests, discussion questions, and the final exam MUST be completed within the required 15 weeks.

To be considered "complete," your instructor must have received your lesson test/discussion questions each week, responded to you with your grade results, and recorded your grade.  If at any time you are in doubt as to whether your assignment was received by the instructor - please send an e-mail inquiry.  Keep your response from the instructor as documentation.

Anti-Virus Protection:
If you do not already have your computer protected by up-to-date anti-virus software, you are strongly encouraged to visit www.grisoft.com, and download the latest version of AVG anti-virus protection.  This will not only protect your computer from viruses that may be transmitted via other students' e-mails to me, it will protect my computer, other students, and the entire College from any viruses that may attach themselves to your e-mails.  AVG is free, and will automatically update itself weekly if you select that option.  This will help to protect all of us from all those nasty viruses out there.

Remember:
If at any time during the completion of this course you have any questions - please do not hesitate to contact me for guidance.  I will be available to assist you however I can.  The Head Start Performance Standards, while not the most interesting reading, can seem somewhat confusing and complicated. However, once you have a good basic understanding of these standards, the material becomes easier to read and interpret.  After almost 14 years with Head Start, I would venture to say that I have most of the Head Start regulations committed to memory, although I still refer to Performance Standards and the Guidance, and the Head Start Act, when in doubt.  This comes with time, training, repeated reading and enforcing of the Standards, and ongoing daily experience.  I hope that this course will give you the foundation for building your knowledge of Head Start regulations and the experience of finding the resources available to help you effectively implement these regulations in your early childhood career.
