Course Description:Purpose of this course is to explain management principles and theories using examples, terms, and situations that are understandable to students beginning their study of the practice of management. Translation of principles and theories into tools that can be used in everyday practice of management in actual on -the-job situations are presented clearly and concisely.
Prerequisites: EN112 and BU113

Writing Assignments:
Writing assignments (case analysis) and Internet exercises are expected to be submitted to the instructor on a timely basis. Please review course calendar for information and due dates. One research paper is expected to be completed by the end of the course. Information regarding the research paper can be found in week one of the course calendar.
Tests
Four unit tests are to be successfully completed by the student to complete the course. Tests can be taken at any time. Tests consist of multiple choice, true and false, and essay questions.
Grading:
Students can advance through the course at their own pace if the student completes and submit assignments prior to or on assignment due date. Students are encouraged to pace themselves accordingly so as to gain a workable understanding and knowledge of the course concepts.

Submitting Assignments/Late Assignments:
Please submit all assignments to the instructor via e-mail. A 10% penalty will be imposed for late assignments. Assignments will not be accepted later than one week from due date as listed on the course calendar.

- Discuss Henry Fayol's Universal Process approach to management.
- Discuss Fredrick W. Taylor's Scientific Approaches to management (the Operational Approach).
- Discuss the behavioral, systems, and contingency approaches to management.
- Identify the seven major changes of the workplace in the Twenty-First Century.
- Discuss the various environments found in management. (Social, Political-legal, Economic, and Technological).
- Discuss international management issues.
- Know social and ethical responsibility of organizations as they relate to management of a workplace.
- Thoroughly understand the basics of planning and project planning.
- Identify strategic processes as they relate to management.
- Discuss the challenges of decisions makers and how they creatively problem solve.
- Identify common characteristics of organization, organizational charts, theories, and cultures.
- Discuss the Burns and Stalker model.
- Discuss the Lawrence and Lorsch model.
- Illustrate human resource management planning processes.
- Discuss the dynamics of organizational communication and its importance.
- Identify the various motivational theories.
- Discuss Group dynamics and leadership.
- Identify how to manage change and conflict.
- Discuss how, when and why managers negotiate.
- List the seven basic process improvement tools for Total Quality Management (TQM).
